Synopsis
Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967) is a musical comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Julie Andrews plays a small-town girl from Kansas who arrives in 1920s New York with one firm goal: to become a thoroughly "modern" woman.
Millie's plan is all business — land a job as a stenographer, then marry her wealthy boss. Reality keeps rewriting it. At her boarding house the landlady quietly traffics the young tenants, sweet Miss Dorothy (Mary Tyler Moore) is not who she appears to be, and a carefree charmer named Jimmy (James Fox) scrambles every calculation Millie makes. Flappers, the Charleston, Prohibition and the gloriously eccentric millionaire Muzzy, played by Carol Channing, swirl around her for two and a half spirited hours.
Director George Roy Hill — who would later make The Sting — built the film as an affectionate spoof of silent pictures and Jazz Age musicals. Elmer Bernstein's score took home the Oscar, and Channing landed a nomination of her own. Reach for it when you want something frothy, lavish and genuinely funny.
