Synopsis

Mad Love (1935) is Karl Freund's horror film, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Brilliant surgeon Dr. Gogol is obsessed with an actress from a Parisian theater of horrors. The catch: she's married.

When her husband, a gifted concert pianist, mangles his hands in a train wreck, Gogol offers to operate. What he grafts on instead are the hands of a freshly executed killer — a knife-thrower. The new hands seem to have a will of their own, and the musician starts to sense something is deeply wrong. In his first Hollywood role, Peter Lorre plays the obsessive doctor with a shaved skull and a soft, creeping voice that's been imitated ever since.

Behind the camera is Karl Freund, the cinematographer of Metropolis and Dracula, and it shows in every shadow. The story comes from Maurice Renard's novel The Hands of Orlac. It runs barely over an hour, yet it's a dense slice of 1930s gothic dread for fans of classic horror. Stream Mad Love online on iFILM.
