Synopsis

Lore (2012), directed by Kate Shortland, is an Australian-German war drama you can watch online on iFILM. Germany, spring 1945: their SS parents arrested by Allied forces, five siblings are left alone. The eldest, fourteen-year-old Lore, has to move them across a shattered country to reach their grandmother in the north.

Saskia Rosendahl carries the film in a debut performance of unsettling precision. Lore grew up inside a worldview her father maintained in uniform — and now she must take help from Thomas, a young Jewish man with forged papers, the kind of person she was raised to see as the enemy. Shortland shoots in close, handheld frames: mud, exhaustion, children's faces processing something they have no language for yet.

The film picked up several BAFTA nominations and was Australia's submission for the Academy Awards' international feature category that year. Where most wartime dramas reckon with atrocity through combat, Lore examines what ideology does to children who believed it completely — and what survives when the system that built them collapses overnight.
