Synopsis
Kings & Queen (Rois et Reine, 2004) is a French drama by Arnaud Desplechin you can watch online on iFILM. Art gallery director Nora is days from her wedding when she travels to Grenoble: her father has a terminal diagnosis, and her son Elias refuses the man she is about to marry. Her plan is to transfer guardianship to Ismaël — her volatile ex, a viola player who has just been involuntarily committed to a psychiatric ward.
The film runs two storylines in parallel. Nora sits with her dying father and his unexpected confessions, which reframe everything she thought she knew about herself. Ismaël — Mathieu Amalric at full intensity — tries to convince the hospital he is sane, which is difficult when his personality keeps making the argument for them. Emmanuelle Devos and Amalric both claimed César Awards in 2005 for these performances.
At two and a half hours, the film earns every minute — each thread turns in a direction you will not predict, and what looks like a melodrama in the first act becomes something considerably darker by the third. Stream Kings & Queen online on iFILM.
