Synopsis
Katalin Varga (2009) is a British-Romanian drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Peter Strickland. Hilda Péter plays the title character: years ago, giving two strangers a ride, she was raped in the forest. She kept quiet. Now the secret is out, and her husband has sent her away with their son Órban.
Katalin loads a cart, puts the boy in it, and heads into the Carpathian mountains to find the men. Strickland keeps the film unhurried — long stretches of road, river mist, village quiet — while the purpose of the journey never leaves the frame. Violence, when it arrives, comes without ceremony.
Shot on location in Transylvania, this is Strickland's debut feature, and it landed the Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution at the 2009 Berlin International Film Festival. The pacing belongs to the landscape. Stream Katalin Varga (2009) on iFILM.
