Synopsis
Objective, Burma! (1945) is Raoul Walsh's wartime drama with Errol Flynn, free to watch online on iFILM. Captain Nelson drops a platoon of American paratroopers deep behind Japanese lines in the Burmese jungle with a single order: find the enemy radar post and blow it apart.
The raid itself goes off cleanly. Everything after it does not. When the men reach the airstrip set for their pickup, Japanese troops are waiting instead of planes, and the mission collapses into a brutal march home through occupied jungle — no rescue, dwindling ammunition, soldiers dropping along the way. Walsh films combat as grind rather than glory: exhaustion, hunger, the held breath before an ambush. Flynn trades his swashbuckler grin for the worn face of an officer counting how many of his men are still breathing.
Released while the Pacific war was still being fought, the film picked up three Academy Award nominations, for its story, editing and score. Britain shelved it for years — local audiences felt it handed the Burma campaign entirely to the Americans. Solid black-and-white war cinema for anyone who loves 1940s Hollywood classics.
