Synopsis
Ice Cold in Alex (1958) is a British war drama you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by J. Lee Thompson and led by John Mills, it drops you into North Africa in the summer of 1942, with Tobruk falling and Rommel pushing east. A shaken, drink-worn ambulance officer named Captain Anson is ordered to drive a battered Austin truck hundreds of miles across the desert to Alexandria.
Crammed in with him are tough sergeant-major Tom Pugh, two stranded army nurses, and a hulking South African officer, van der Poel, whose papers never quite add up. Minefields, sinking sand, German patrols and a dying engine stand between them and safety. What keeps Anson going is one stubborn promise to himself: an ice-cold lager waiting in a bar in Alex.
Anthony Quayle, Sylvia Syms and Harry Andrews round out the small cast, and the tension comes less from combat than from four exhausted people trapped in one cab where every mile could be the last. The final shot of that frosted glass later turned up in beer commercials, yet after ninety minutes of thirst and dread it lands hard. Stream Ice Cold in Alex (1958) online on iFILM.
