Destination Moon
Two years in the making!
Synopsis
Destination Moon (1950) is Irving Pichel's science-fiction film, and you can watch it online here — the picture that kicked off serious space travel on screen. A scientist, a retired Air Force general and an industrialist pool their money to build a rocket called "Luna" out in the Mojave Desert, with no government backing, just stubbornness and private cash.
Four astronauts break free of Earth, and then comes the stuff the movie was made for: weightlessness, equipment that fails, a spacewalk on a single tether. On the lunar surface a discovery worse than any alien waits for them — there isn't enough fuel to get home, and someone may have to stay behind. Hollywood in 1950 was already staging g-forces and a black star field twenty years before Apollo did it for real.
Producer George Pal bet everything on plausibility, and writer Robert Heinlein helped shape the script, which is why you get engineering detail instead of space opera. Its effects, unheard of at the time, took home the Academy Award. Today it plays like a time capsule of how people pictured a Moon shot before one ever happened. A treat for fans of retro sci-fi and genre history. Stream Destination Moon (1950) online on iFILM.
