Synopsis
Force of Evil (1950) is a film noir you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Abraham Polonsky. Wall Street lawyer Joe Morse fronts for a mob boss who wants to swallow New York's small numbers banks into one giant racket.
The one bank standing in the way belongs to Joe's older brother Leo, a small-timer who wants nothing to do with gangsters. Joe pushes him to join; Leo digs in. Then comes a rigged Fourth of July payout on the number 776, and the two brothers land on opposite sides of a war neither can stop.
John Garfield carries the picture as Joe, with Thomas Gomez and Marie Windsor around him. Polonsky shot the dialogue almost like blank verse, then McCarthy's blacklist buried him for two decades — part of why the film went missing for so long.
