London, 1940. Ballerina Myra and officer Roy Cronin meet on the bridge during a blackout. He proposes within days; she accepts. He ships out to the front before the week is up. Myra is expelled from her ballet company for the relationship. Then she reads his name on a casualty list — and the years that follow close off choices she didn't know she had.
This came out a year after Leigh's performance as Scarlett O'Hara, and the contrast is striking: here she plays everything small and still, which makes the ending land harder than any amount of tears would.
