Synopsis
Gold Diggers of 1933 is a Warner Bros. musical comedy you can watch online on iFILM — directed by Mervyn LeRoy with choreography by Busby Berkeley that set the template for Hollywood musical spectacle. Joan Blondell, Ruby Keeler, Dick Powell, and a young Ginger Rogers star.
Broadway is shut down. Theaters have closed, props seized for unpaid bills, and three showgirls — Carol, Trixie, and Polly — are broke and desperate. A wealthy neighbor named Brad puts up the money for a new revue; his stiff Boston family promptly sends two brothers to stop him.
What elevates this beyond Depression-era escapism is Berkeley's choreography: impossible overhead camera angles, kaleidoscopic formations, and a closing number called "Remember My Forgotten Man" — an unsentimental, angry tribute to WWI veterans begging on breadlines. For pre-Code 1933, that was a direct political statement. Stream Gold Diggers of 1933 online on iFILM.
