Synopsis
Thieves of the Wood (2020), Season 1 is a Flemish period drama you can watch online on iFILM — ten episodes that drop returning soldier Jan de Lichte into a hometown he no longer recognises.
The sick and the poor have been branded and driven into the forest, and that injustice is what the season is really about. Jan gathers the outcasts into a gang, robs the aristocracy's stagecoaches, and grows from hunted deserter into the face of a revolt. Across town, new bailiff Baru tries to clean up the corrupt City Watch and runs straight into burgomaster Coffijn, whose road-building scheme bankrolls everything. Jan's romance with Héloïse is caught between those worlds. The bounty on his head keeps climbing.

Jan de Lichte is literally dragged towards home as an accused murderer/deserter. When he arrives in his hometown, he finds change everywhere. The poorest citizens tend to end up branded, beat and banished from town, but they have joined together in the forest and that’s where Jan discovers family and friends.

Héloïse meets a suitor. Coffijn resists Baru's push for reform of the City Watch. Jan tells the Embo family that Emiel is dead, but hides his guilt.

Tincke rescues a wounded Jan from bounty hunters but discovers the price on his friend's head. Coffijn involves partners in his road-building plan.

The thieves discover the valuable cargo they've stolen in the stagecoach raid, but the incident provokes a violent backlash not even Baru can prevent.
