Synopsis
The Great Ziegfeld (1936) is a lavish Hollywood musical biography you can watch online on iFILM. It traces the life of Florenz Ziegfeld, the Broadway impresario who spent decades staging America's most extravagant revues.
William Powell plays him as a charming gambler — a man who makes and loses fortunes, discovers stars, falls in love and bounces back for one more show. Myrna Loy co-stars, with Luise Rainer as his first wife, the singer Anna Held. The production spares nothing: one number built around a giant revolving "wedding-cake" tower packed with performers became a byword for MGM spectacle.
The picture took the Best Picture Oscar, and Rainer landed Best Actress for her turn as Held. It runs nearly three hours and now plays like a time capsule — proof of how 1930s Hollywood pictured sheer grandeur. A treat for anyone who loves classic musicals and old show-business lore.
