Mrs Bennet pins her hopes on two newcomers: the warm, wealthy Mr Bingley and his aloof companion Mr Darcy. Bingley falls quickly for gentle eldest sister Jane. Darcy, though, can barely tolerate the local gentry, and his pride collides head-on with the sharp tongue of the second Bennet daughter, Elizabeth. Every conversation between them turns into a duel neither will admit to enjoying.

Directed by Robert Z. Leonard, with a screenplay Aldous Huxley helped write, the film pairs Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier as the sparring leads. It took home the Academy Award for its art direction and remains the glossiest, most playful Austen ever filmed — a comedy of manners where a good insult lands harder than a kiss.
