Synopsis
People on Sunday (Menschen am Sonntag, 1930) is a silent Berlin film you can watch online on iFILM. Half documentary, half fiction, it casts five ordinary city-dwellers as themselves — their characters even carry the actors' own names.
There's barely a plot, and that's the whole idea. The work week ends, Berlin empties out, and its people make for Lake Wannsee to swim, kick a ball around, flirt and sprawl in the grass. The camera follows two women and two men through a featherweight one-day romance, catching real faces in a real city in the summer of 1929.
Behind this modest sketch sits a roster of future Hollywood heavyweights: directors Edgar Ulmer and Robert Siodmak, with a young Billy Wilder and Fred Zinnemann on the script. A quiet experiment that became a record of Berlin just years before everything there changed for good. Stream People on Sunday (1930) online on iFILM.
