Synopsis
City Girl (1930) is F. W. Murnau's silent melodrama, available to watch online on iFILM. A young man from a Minnesota wheat farm rides to Chicago to sell the harvest and, in a noisy diner, meets a waitress named Kate.
They fall for each other fast, marry, and head back to the land — where Lem's hard-faced father greets the city bride as nothing more than a gold-digger. Stretching a plain story across dusty fields and crowded streets, Murnau shapes a parable of two Americas that cannot share one roof. His camera rarely sits still; it runs alongside the lovers through swaying wheat in one of the tenderest passages the silent era ever produced.
This is a late Hollywood effort from the director of Sunrise and Nosferatu, released just as silent cinema was dying out and overlooked ever since. It deserves better: beneath the modest plot lies warm, startlingly alive filmmaking about love, pride and forgiveness. Stream City Girl (1930) online on iFILM.
