Synopsis
Lone Star (1996) is an American drama written and directed by John Sayles, available to watch online on iFILM. In a small Texas border town, construction workers dig up a skull with a sheriff's badge nearby. The dead man is Charlie Wade — a corrupt lawman who vanished decades ago along with a sum of county money.
Sheriff Sam Deeds, played by Chris Cooper, starts asking questions and keeps running into one name: his own father's. Buddy Deeds was the man who stepped into Wade's post and became a local legend. Now Sam has to figure out whether that legend was real — or whether his father is the prime suspect. Kris Kristofferson plays Wade as a man who ruled by fear and cash, and the contrast with Cooper's quietly methodical Sam gives the film its moral spine. Matthew McConaughey has a small role early on.
Sayles cuts between past and present without conventional transitions — the camera just pans and the decade changes — a formal choice that insists the two timelines are never truly separate. What holds it together is not the murder mystery but the question of how much truth a community can afford to know about itself. Stream Lone Star (1996) online on iFILM.
