Synopsis
Generation War (Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter, 2013), Season 1 is a three-part German war drama to watch online on iFILM. Berlin, summer 1941: five friends raise a last glass before three of them ship east.
Each episode covers a different stretch of the war. Brothers Wilhelm and Friedhelm march into the Wehrmacht as officer and foot soldier, and the front strips the idealism off them fast. The invasion stalls in the Russian winter, and Wilhelm is wounded and left for dead. By the third hour the Red Army is closing on Berlin, and the Reich — along with everything the friends once believed — is coming apart.
Produced by German broadcaster ZDF, the miniseries set off a national argument about how to remember the generation that fought for Hitler. On the eve of the Russian invasion in 1941, five German friends gather in Berlin before going separate ways: army lieutenant Wilhelm, his intellectual brother Friedhelm, nurse Charlotte, Jewish tailor Viktor, and his singer girlfriend Greta.
S1·E2A Different War
As the war progresses, the soldiers realize they are not fighting the war that they expected. Charlotte and Greta must live with the consequences of their choices, and Viktor and Wilhelm find themselves on the run.
S1·E3A Different Country
The German army begins to retreat from the Eastern Front, and all five friends must decide who to side with in order to survive and fulfill their pledge to reunite in Berlin.
