Synopsis
Martín (Hache) (1997) is Adolfo Aristarain's drama, available to watch online on iFILM. After a near-fatal overdose, 19-year-old Buenos Aires kid Martín is shipped off to Madrid to live with the father he barely knows.
That father is a film director (Federico Luppi) who has built a life in Spain with his much younger lover Alicia (Cecilia Roth) and his closest friend, the actor Dante (Eusebio Poncela). To tell the two Martíns apart, the son simply goes by "Hache" — Spanish for the letter H. What follows is a long, charged exchange between four people about freedom, homeland, drugs, and whether anyone is truly fit to be a father. Aristarain takes his time: the film runs well past two hours, mostly arguments around a table and cigarette smoke.
It stands among the defining Argentine films of the nineties, carried by Luppi's trademark monologues on dignity and independence. Slow, talky, grown-up cinema for people who care more about character than plot. Stream Martín (Hache) (1997) online on iFILM.
