Synopsis

Penelope is stretched thin between work, college and a real relationship with fellow vet Max, which forces the question of how much she's willing to let him in. The season's boldest thread follows her depression: she quietly drops her antidepressants rather than explain them, and the show refuses to play it for easy laughs. Alex starts acting out, Lydia studies for her U.S. citizenship test, and a flashback to 2001 reveals how Elena's birth rewrote everyone's plans. The finale lands the whole family at a hospital bedside.
