Synopsis
"The Castle of Sand" (砂の器, 1974) is a Japanese detective drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Yoshitarō Nomura. The film adapts Seichō Matsumoto's novel — Matsumoto shaped postwar Japan's crime fiction almost single-handedly, and this is considered one of his strongest screen adaptations.
Two Tokyo detectives work a baffling case: an old man found beaten to death in a rail yard, no name, no traceable past. The investigation moves slowly and deliberately, reaching back through decades of Japanese social history, until it arrives at a revelation that reframes everything that came before. At 143 minutes, the film earns its length. Tetsurō Tamba leads the cast. Stream "The Castle of Sand" (1974) on iFILM.
