Synopsis
Harry and Tonto (1974) is Paul Mazursky's gentle road movie, free to watch online on iFILM. Harry Coombes, a retired teacher in his seventies, has spent his whole life on New York's Upper West Side — until the city tears his building down for a parking garage.
With nowhere left to stay, Harry packs up his cat Tonto and points himself west. The trip becomes a slow drift across America: visits to grown children who've turned into near-strangers, odd encounters with hitchhikers and drifters, and a long-delayed look at a country he never made time for. Larry Hagman and Ellen Burstyn turn up along the way.
Art Carney carries the whole film on quiet charm, and the role landed him the Best Actor Oscar — a win that famously edged out Nicholson, Pacino and Hoffman. It's an unhurried, bittersweet picture about aging, letting go, and the strange freedom of a journey with no real destination. Stream Harry and Tonto (1974) online on iFILM.
