Synopsis
Under the Mountain (2009) is a New Zealand fantasy film you can watch online on iFILM. Director Jonathan King adapted Maurice Gee's 1979 novel — a genuine Kiwi classic — shooting on real Auckland lava fields where the city's dormant volcanoes become something considerably less dormant.
Twins Rachel and Ricky arrive in Auckland and quickly sense that something ancient stirs beneath it. A mysterious figure named Tom — played by Sam Neill — tells them that they alone hold the power to stop what's waking below. The volcanic landscape does a lot of the work here; the film doesn't over-explain what it shows. Better known in New Zealand than abroad, Under the Mountain is a solid piece of homegrown genre filmmaking that earns its place alongside the novel it came from.
