Synopsis
Eureka (2001) is a Japanese drama by Shinji Aoyama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. A bus hijacking turns into a massacre. Three people walk away alive: the driver, Makoto, and two teenage siblings who witnessed everything.
The shock leaves the kids mute — they stop speaking to adults and to each other. Months later Makoto (Kōji Yakusho) comes back, moves into the orphaned siblings' empty house, and three broken people try to learn how to live again under one roof. Out in the countryside, meanwhile, more bodies keep turning up. The film runs three and a half hours and is shot almost entirely in faded sepia, turning rural Kyushu into a drained, stalled world.
Aoyama never rushes a single scene: long takes, silence, and feeling that returns by inches. At Cannes the film took the FIPRESCI prize and the Ecumenical Jury award. This one rewards patience — a quiet, sprawling study of trauma and the slow climb out of it. Stream Eureka (2001) online on iFILM.
