Synopsis
Eisenstein in Guanajuato (2015), Peter Greenaway's provocative romp, is ready to watch online on iFILM. Late in 1931 the Soviet director Sergei Eisenstein arrives in a small Mexican town to shoot a sprawling new project — and the place undoes him.
Fresh off a Hollywood rejection, the man behind Battleship Potemkin surrenders to Mexico completely. His guide, Palomino Cañedo, becomes his lover, and that affair drags every buried fear of the filmmaker into the open. Greenaway films it as a fever dream: split screens, a camera that pirouettes around rooms, baroque interiors, and the mummy museum the director was so desperate to capture. Elmer Bäck plays Eisenstein as a jittery, motor-mouthed, holy-fool genius.
This is no tidy biopic but a wild fantasia about ten days that remade a man. Explicit, visually overloaded and decidedly not for everyone, it's aimed at viewers who love Greenaway and can stomach his excess. Stream Eisenstein in Guanajuato (2015) online on iFILM.
