Synopsis
A washed-up poet hired to investigate miracles — it sounds like a setup for a joke, and The Hippopotamus (2017) plays it exactly that way. You can watch John Jencks' British comedy online on iFILM, with Roger Allam as Ted Wallace, a bilious, sharp-tongued critic freshly fired and barely tolerated in polite company.
Ted's goddaughter pays him for an odd errand: visit an old friend's country estate and explain the "healings" said to be happening there. The lord's house is supposedly full of small miracles, and at the center sits the youngest son, David, a quiet teenager with a very overactive imagination. Ted shows up to expose everyone, but a mystery with no crime soon turns up far more awkward truths.
Adapted from Stephen Fry's novel, the script lives on his trademark venom — long tirades, literary jabs and very English indecency. It's for viewers who'd rather watch one brilliant grouch dismantle a dinner party than sit through a chase. Stream The Hippopotamus (2017) online on iFILM.
