Synopsis
Nanga Parbat (2010) is a German mountaineering drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Joseph Vilsmaier and shot on real glaciers rather than a studio set. The film goes back to the summer of 1970, when brothers Reinhold and Günther Messner tackled the Rupal Face — nearly 4,500 metres of near-vertical ice and rock in the Pakistani Himalayas, an unclimbed route at the time.
They made it to the top. The descent was another story. Günther was exhausted and possibly injured; the brothers chose an unknown western slope down. Only Reinhold reached base camp. His version — that an avalanche took his brother — became one of mountaineering's most disputed accounts. Members of the original expedition claimed he left Günther deliberately to pursue a more daring route.
Florian Stetter and Andreas Tobias play the brothers, with Volker Bruch in support. The film is less interested in assigning guilt than in showing what extreme altitude does to human judgment. Günther's remains were recovered on the mountain in 2005 — thirty-five years later — and the argument did not end there. Stream Nanga Parbat (2010) online on iFILM.
