Our Day Will Come

Our Day Will Come (Notre jour viendra, 2010) is Romain Gavras's pitch-black French comedy-drama, and you can watch online on iFILM. Remy, a redheaded teenager, is choking on rage — bullied on the pitch, at war with his family in a cramped flat — until an older redhead named Patrick walks into his life.

Patrick is Vincent Cassel at his most unhinged: a burnt-out guidance counselor who decides not to fix the boy but to harden him. The two bolt, blow their last cash on a sports car and sharp suits, and drive north toward Ireland, a place where, in their fantasy, redheads will finally belong. The quest for a promised land curdles fast into a road trip on the edge, where hurt spills out as violence and freedom looks a lot like self-destruction.

This was Gavras's feature debut after a run of provocative music videos, and that restless, confrontational eye is there from the first frame.
