Critical Condition

Critical Condition (1987) is a hospital comedy you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Michael Apted and starring Richard Pryor. Con man Eddie fakes a breakdown to dodge a prison sentence and winds up sent for psychiatric evaluation instead.

One power failure later, the hospital is in chaos and Eddie is mistaken for a staff physician. No credentials, no training, no plan — just the instinct to keep improvising. Rachel Ticotin, Joe Mantegna, and Ruben Blades round out the cast, with a young Wesley Snipes in an early supporting part. Pryor made sharper films, but few where his energy slots in as cleanly: a con man performing competence is really just a smaller version of what he always did.
