Thunderheart

Ray Levoi is sent to a poverty-stricken Sioux reservation in South Dakota to close a murder case quickly — Washington wants an activist from a Native rights movement arrested and done. The veteran agent running the investigation (Shepard) has his own ideas about how these things get resolved out here. The tribal liaison (Greene) watches Ray carefully and says very little. The deeper Ray goes, the clearer it becomes that he was sent not to find the truth but to bury it.

Apted had spent years filming documentaries on the reservation before shooting this, and that familiarity shows: the landscape, the poverty, the political tension — none of it feels like set dressing.
