Synopsis
The Hidden Blade (隠し剣 鬼の爪, 2004) is a Japanese period drama by Yoji Yamada that you can watch online on iFILM. The story unfolds in the dying days of the shogunate, around 1860. In a quiet northern clan, low-ranking samurai Munezo keeps to the old code, even as muskets, cannon and Western drill start dismantling the world he was raised in.
The film leans on feeling far more than on swordplay. Munezo cares deeply for Kie, a farm girl who once served in his household, yet the rigid class divide keeps them apart. Then an order arrives that breaks everything open: he must hunt down a former friend branded a traitor. Only his old fencing master knows the secret killing technique nicknamed "Devil's Claw." Masatoshi Nagase and Takako Matsu lead the cast.
This is the second entry in Yamada's samurai trilogy, following The Twilight Samurai, and it carries the same understated touch — more about the dignity and duty of an ordinary man than about bloodshed. Lovers of slow, humane jidaigeki will find a lot to sit with here. Stream The Hidden Blade (2004) online on iFILM.
