Synopsis
Osama (2004) is Siddiq Barmak's Afghan drama, available to watch online on iFILM. It was the first feature shot in the country after the Taliban fell, and it looks straight back at those years — a time when a woman couldn't step outside without a man beside her.
A widow loses the only breadwinner her family had and is barred from working herself. The way out is a terrible one: she cuts her twelve-year-old daughter's hair, dresses her as a boy and sends her to earn under a borrowed name. The girl flinches at every glance, because being found out means death — and the Taliban are busy rounding up boys for religious schooling. Marina Golbahari, cast off the streets of Kabul, carries the whole film.
Barmak worked with no trained actors, building the story on real faces and the ruined texture of the city itself, which makes it land harder than any staged version could. It took the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film — the first such honor for Afghan cinema. A hard watch, but an essential one for anyone after truth over comfort.
