Synopsis
Antigone (2019) is a Canadian drama you can watch online on iFILM. Director Sophie Deraspe transplants Sophocles' ancient play into the immigrant neighborhoods of present-day Montreal, with Nahéma Ricci as a young woman from a North African family caught between what the law says and what she believes is right.
Her brother is arrested after a confrontation with police. Antigone decides to fight for him and immediately runs up against a system that treats refugee families as paperwork, not people. One wrong move and the whole family could be deported — and the film never lets you forget it.
Deraspe's film was Canada's official submission for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film and took the Canadian Screen Award for Best Motion Picture. It's the kind of film that works by restraint — no melodrama, no speeches, just a young woman who refuses to bend. Stream Antigone (2019) on iFILM.
