Synopsis
Genius Party (2007) is a Japanese animated anthology from Studio 4°C you can watch online on iFILM. Seven short films, seven directors — no two of them making the same kind of animation.
Masaaki Yuasa of Mind Game contributes "Happy Machine," a hazy, flat-lined look at a baby's earliest impressions of the world. Shinji Kimura's "Deathtic 4" crawls into the creepier corners of childhood imagination. Shinichirō Watanabe, who gave the world Cowboy Bebop, shows up twice — the tender "Baby Blue" and the off-kilter "Doorbell." Shoji Kawamori's "Shanghai Dragon" burns through mecha tropes with obvious pleasure. Atsuko Fukushima opens the whole program with something barely narrative, closer to visual music than storytelling.
Studio 4°C has never made a safe film, and this collection proves the point. For anyone who wants animation that refuses to behave, this is the right place to start. Stream Genius Party (2007) online on iFILM.
