Synopsis
State Fair (1945) is a Technicolor musical you can watch online on iFILM. Director Walter Lang brought Rodgers and Hammerstein's first original Hollywood score to the screen — a set of songs written directly for cinema, not adapted from any Broadway show.
The Frake family makes the annual trip to the Iowa State Fair. Father Abel (Charles Winninger) has his champion pig Blueboy entered in competition; mother Melissa (Fay Bainter) is in the mincemeat and pickles contest. Son Wayne (Dick Haymes) wanders into a flirtation with a showgirl, while daughter Margy (Jeanne Crain) meets a journalist who makes her question whether the life she has back home is really the one she wants.
"It Might as Well Be Spring" picked up the Oscar for Best Original Song — the first Academy Award for the Rodgers and Hammerstein partnership. Warm, unhurried and unashamed of its cheerfulness, State Fair is the kind of mid-century musical that doesn't apologise for making you feel good. Stream it online on iFILM.
