Synopsis
Let's Make Love (1960) — watch online on iFILM — is a Hollywood comedy directed by George Cukor, with Marilyn Monroe and Yves Montand in the lead roles. French billionaire Jean-Marc Clément discovers he's about to be lampooned in an off-Broadway revue and goes to stop it — only to fall for Amanda Dell, the show's star, played by Monroe.
His plan: pose as a struggling actor hired to play himself, so she never knows she's dealing with the real thing. Tony Randall and Wilfrid Hyde-White handle the comic machinery around the edges, while Bing Crosby and Gene Kelly appear as themselves, each tasked with teaching the hapless billionaire how to perform. Monroe delivers "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" in a sequence that became one of her most referenced screen moments.
Cukor was a better fit for drama than broad farce, and the script shows the seams in places — but Monroe and Montand generate enough genuine heat to carry it past the thin patches. The affair between the two leads, which began on set and was widely known at the time, gives the film an extra layer that no writer could have engineered.
