Synopsis
Victor/Victoria (1982) is Blake Edwards' musical comedy, available to watch online on iFILM. In the cabarets of 1930s Paris, gifted soprano Victoria is broke and unbookable. Her voice can shatter glass, yet every club manager calls her too plain for the spotlight.
So she gambles on a wild idea. Victoria becomes Victor — a man who performs on stage as a glamorous female impersonator. The act is a sensation, but her private life unravels fast: Chicago mobster King Marchan (James Garner) falls hard for "Victor" and can't make sense of the feeling. Julie Andrews juggles the double role with effortless wit, backed by Robert Preston as her loyal mentor and an Oscar-nominated Lesley Ann Warren.
Edwards reworked an old German film into a featherlight farce about how flimsy the labels of "man" and "woman" really are. Henry Mancini's score and Leslie Bricusse's lyrics took home the film's Academy Award. Sharp, charming and bolder than most comedies of its era dared to be.
