Synopsis
News from Home (1977) is Chantal Akerman's documentary, available to watch online on iFILM. A Belgian-French-German work with no plot in the usual sense: the screen holds mid-1970s New York, while Akerman's own voice reads aloud the letters her mother sent her.
The camera lingers. Empty streets, subway platforms, shop windows, Manhattan intersections shot in long static takes. Traffic hums, strangers pass, the underground roars. Over all of it drift the letters from Brussels — a mother worried, asking her daughter to write more often, relaying small home news, leaning gently on guilt. The city stays silent; the mother keeps talking. The whole film lives in that gap between a daughter who left and the home she left behind.
Akerman made this at 27, two years after Jeanne Dielman, cementing her place among the defining names of slow, observational cinema. Viewers wired for momentum will struggle; anyone willing to sit with duration and listen to the quiet between lines will find it opens up completely.
