Synopsis
Iphigenia (1977), Michael Cacoyannis's adaptation of Euripides, is available to watch online on iFILM. The Greek director had already filmed Electra in 1962 and brought the same conviction here: ancient tragedy as a story about power, not a relic to be preserved.
The Greek army is grounded at Aulis — no wind, no departure. The priests announce what the gods demand: King Agamemnon must sacrifice his own daughter. He summons Iphigenia under cover of a wedding to Achilles. Clytemnestra, played by Irene Papas, travels with her and learns the real purpose once it is too late to leave. What follows is a confrontation between a father's ambition and a mother's grief, with Iphigenia caught between them and forced to find her own answer.
The film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. Stream Iphigenia (1977) online on iFILM.
