Synopsis
Ashfall (백두산, 2019) is a South Korean disaster action film you can watch online on iFILM, co-directed by Lee Hae-jun and Kim Byung-seo, with Lee Byung-hun, Ha Jung-woo, and Ma Dong-seok heading an ensemble cast.
The volcano beneath Baekdu Mountain — long dormant, deeply mythologized — suddenly erupts, sending earthquakes across the peninsula. A scientist calculates that a precisely placed nuclear charge inside the mountain could relieve the magma pressure before a second, far worse eruption levels everything from Seoul to Pyongyang. South Korea has no nukes. The only path to the target runs through the North, which means a special forces team must cross the border, extract a jailed Northern agent, and work together with a man who has every reason not to cooperate.
The destruction sequences land with real spectacle, but the film's actual tension sits between two soldiers from opposite sides of the DMZ stuck depending on each other. Stream Ashfall (2019) online on iFILM.
