Private Eye (2009) is a Korean crime thriller you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Park Tae-min. Seoul, 1910 — under Japanese occupation, the law decides who it protects and who it frames. Reporter Hong Jin-ho (Hwang Jeong-min) scrapes by finding runaway wives and saving up for a ticket to America.
Then a frightened medical student turns up with a problem: a body in the woods, and it belongs to a government minister's son. Terrified of being accused himself, the student hires Hong to find the real killer before the police close the case the easy way. Ryu Deok-hwan plays the student; the two make a mismatched, quietly entertaining team working a city that doesn't want the case solved.
Period detective fiction lives or dies on whether the setting does real work rather than just providing costumes. Here the colonial backdrop puts genuine stakes behind every clue. Stream Private Eye (2009) online on iFILM.
