Synopsis
One Way Passage (1932) is a pre-Code melodrama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Tay Garnett and starring William Powell and Kay Francis. A smooth-talking criminal en route to San Quentin for execution meets a terminally ill society woman on a Hong Kong-to-San Francisco ocean liner. Neither tells the other the truth — which makes every hour together feel both perfect and borrowed.
Garnett keeps sentiment in check with a sharp script and two wisecracking comic sidekicks played by Aline MacMahon and Frank McHugh. Robert Lord took the Academy Award for Best Original Story in 1933 for this one. Quietly heartbreaking and surprisingly funny — a combination the era pulled off better than most give it credit for.
