Synopsis
Love Me Tonight (1932) is Rouben Mamoulian's musical comedy, free to watch online on iFILM. A Parisian tailor named Maurice rides out to a country château to collect an unpaid bill and ends up falling for a princess. The songs come from Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart.
To save face, the viscount who owes the money passes Maurice off as a baron. The château is full of bored nobility — a doddering duke, three spinster aunts, and Princess Jeanette, a young widow who has frozen everyone out. Maurice falls hard; she slowly thaws. The whole thing balances on a single question nobody has asked yet: what does a baron actually do for a living? Maurice Chevalier and Jeanette MacDonald carry the romance, with a young Myrna Loy stealing scenes on the side.
Mamoulian was playing with sound while it was still brand new, and half the tricks here got borrowed for decades after: dialogue that rhymes, cuts timed to the beat, and "Isn't It Romantic?" passed hand to hand from Paris all the way to the château. It's quick, cheeky, and openly naughty in the way only pre-Code Hollywood could get away with — proof that old musicals don't have to be stiff. Stream Love Me Tonight (1932) online on iFILM.
