Synopsis
Trouble in Paradise (1932) is Ernst Lubitsch's Hollywood romantic comedy — watch it online on iFILM. Herbert Marshall stars as Gaston Monescu, a thief who carries himself like an aristocrat. Miriam Hopkins plays his accomplice Lily, a pickpocket sharp enough to spot a fake diamond and a faker even faster. Kay Francis rounds out the triangle as Madame Colet, the wealthy Parisian perfume heiress they set out to rob.
Gaston and Lily first meet in Venice, each trying to steal from the other, and end up in love. In Paris they execute the plan: Gaston talks his way into Colet's household as her personal secretary. From there he can reach anything — the safe, the books, the jewellery. What he didn't count on was Colet herself being genuinely interesting, and the line between the scheme and something more personal starts to dissolve.
Lubitsch made this film right at the edge of what pre-Code Hollywood allowed, and the wit here — all insinuation and perfectly timed silences — is sharper than anything that came after the censors arrived. It's the template for every sophisticated comedy that followed and still outruns most of them. Stream Trouble in Paradise (1932) online on iFILM.
