Synopsis
Happy as Lazzaro (Lazzaro felice, 2018) is an Italian fantasy-drama directed by Alice Rohrwacher that you can watch online on iFILM. An Italian-Swiss-French-German co-production, it took the Best Screenplay prize at Cannes.
Lazzaro is a young farmhand in an isolated rural commune — so quietly good-natured that the people around him treat it as stupidity. He does every task asked of him without complaint, without agenda. Then Tancredi, the landlady's son, pulls him into a staged kidnapping plot. Adriano Tardiolo carries the film on near-silence. Alba Rohrwacher also appears in the cast.
At a certain point the film steps across time without announcing it. Rohrwacher uses this not as a twist but as a question: what happens to people like Lazzaro when the world changes around them?
