Synopsis
The Lower Depths (Les Bas-fonds, 1936) — watch online on iFILM. Jean Renoir's French reworking of Maxim Gorky's celebrated play moves the action from Russian dosshouses to the backstreets of Paris, with Jean Gabin as the young thief Pepel anchoring a remarkable cast alongside Louis Jouvet.
A ruined baron comes home intending to shoot himself and finds Pepel already there — the thief stole the gun. The two drink through the night and stumble into an unlikely friendship. At the flophouse run by the crooked fence Kostylev, Pepel is caught between the landlord's scheming wife Vassilissa and her quieter sister Natacha; jealousy and hidden motives push the situation past the point of no return.
Renoir pulls Gorky apart and reassembles it as something distinctly French — intimate, fatalistic, and alive to small human gestures. Gabin says almost nothing and means everything. Watch The Lower Depths (1936) online on iFILM.
