Synopsis
Libeled Lady (1936) is the kind of fast-talking MGM comedy you can watch online on iFILM. A newspaper brands wealthy socialite Connie Allenbury a home-wrecker, she fires back with a multi-million-dollar libel suit, and frazzled editor Warren Haggerty has one weekend to save his paper.
His fix is a con. Haggerty drafts smooth-talking pal Bill Chandler and his own long-suffering fiancée, Gladys, into a scheme to catch Connie in a scandal of their own making. So Gladys marries Bill — on paper, strictly business — while Bill cozies up to Connie. From there it spirals: a staged wedding, a faked affair, the funniest fly-fishing lesson ever filmed, and four people falling for the wrong partners.
The draw is the cast — Jean Harlow, William Powell, Myrna Loy and Spencer Tracy, four marquee names clearly having a ball stealing scenes from each other. Director Jack Conway keeps the patter snapping faster than you can laugh. The picture was up for the Best Picture Oscar and still stands as a benchmark of golden-age screwball. If you love old black-and-white films where the dialogue hits harder than any chase, start here. Stream Libeled Lady (1936) online on iFILM.
