Synopsis
The Martha Mitchell Effect (2022) is a documentary short you can watch online on iFILM. In just forty minutes it resurrects a woman most people have forgotten — though there was a stretch when reporters chased her the way they chased a first lady. Martha Mitchell, wife of Nixon's attorney general, decided to tell the press what she saw going on inside his circle.
The directors build the whole thing from the archive: period TV interviews, home recordings, newspaper front pages, and not a single present-day talking head. A chatty Republican wife starts phoning journalists about the dirty work tangled up in Watergate. The White House answers with a smear — she drinks, she makes things up — and one by one, people stop believing her. Which was exactly the point.
Directed by Anne Alvergue and Debra McClutchy, the film lends its name to a real term coined by psychiatrists: the "Martha Mitchell effect," when a person telling the truth gets written off as delusional. It's a sharp, angry portrait of what honesty costs — and the short went on to land an Oscar nomination. Stream The Martha Mitchell Effect (2022) online on iFILM.
