About

Synopsis

Ronaldo (2015) is a documentary directed by Anthony Wonke that you can watch online on iFILM. Shot over fourteen months with full, unfiltered access to the player's life, it covers the three-time Ballon d'Or winner at the peak of his career — on the pitch, at home, and in the moments between.

The film moves between three registers at once. There is Ronaldo the relentless competitor, haunted by the possibility of slowing down. There is the kid from Madeira who grew up with almost nothing and whose mother Dolores Aveiro is frank about what those years actually looked like. And there is the single father raising young Cristiano Jr., visibly more at ease with a toddler than with a press conference. Agent Jorge Mendes and brother Hugo Aveiro fill in the gaps the subject himself sidesteps.

Produced by the team behind Senna and Amy — two documentaries that reset what a sports biography could do — this is not a club-sanctioned highlights reel. The film is at its most interesting when Ronaldo admits he is afraid: afraid of injury, afraid of being forgotten, afraid of not being enough. Stream Ronaldo (2015) online on iFILM.
