Synopsis

Joan Bennett plays a mother who, with her husband away, gets pulled into someone else's crime one careful step at a time. Then a blackmailer, Martin Donnelly (James Mason), turns up at her door — and, against his own plans, falls for the woman he came to squeeze. A strange, doomed closeness grows between them over money and dread.
Ophüls films suffocating suburban routine as a trap: chores, unpaid bills, the Christmas rush, and a woman boxed in by the role of perfect homemaker. It draws on Elisabeth Sanxay Holding's novel The Blank Wall, filmed again half a century later. A subtle, underrated noir that rests entirely on its heroine rather than its hero.
